“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the priests of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.” —James 5:14-15.  

This is one of the seven sacraments that Christ instituted and offered to His Church.  It one of the sacraments that continues Christ’s healing ministry.  It brings strength and God’s peace so that people may carry their cross faithfully.  In the past, it was called “Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction”, but too often people waited until their deathbed.  Christ didn’t simply heal those on their deathbed, He healed those who had illnesses as well. 

Requirements to receive the Sacrament Anointing of the Sick: 

– Must be a baptized Catholic 

– Must be seriously ill, about to undergo serious surgery, or be advanced in age. 

– Must not be in serious sin (if conscious, should receive the sacrament of confession first) 

Process to receive the Anointing of the Sick: 

– If you are in a hospital, you may ask the staff to contact the Catholic Chaplain assigned to that hospital. 

– Otherwise, call the priest to make an appointment.
